Arrival of LOOP pallets starts sustainable shift in delivery of building materials

Sometimes the small things in life can make the biggest difference. In the construction sector, the same is true. This month sees the start of what seems like a relatively minor shift in the distribution of building materials. However, dig a little deeper, and it is clear major change is coming in relation to the industry’s use of pallets.

In late May, in a landmark move, British Gypsum started distributing its bagged plaster on The Pallet LOOP’s distinctive green, circular economy pallets, which are designed to be collected and reused again and again.

With more than one million green LOOP pallets due to arrive in the sector over the next year, the construction industry is being encouraged to sign up for The Pallet LOOP’s nationwide pallet collection service. As well as the obvious environmental benefits there are major cost savings on offer with The Pallet LOOP paying up to £4 back for any green LOOP pallet it collects. Here’s what you need to know about The Pallet LOOP:

A solution to a long-standing problem
•    Pallets are essential for moving materials – but their disposal is problematic
•    Every year around 20 million pallets are manufactured for UK construction
•    That’s roughly 600,000 cubic metres of sawn timber used per annum, just for pallets
•    Estimates suggest less than 10% of pallets are currently recovered and reused
•    90% of pallets getting used just once equates to around 300,000 tonnes of waste.

A different approach to pallets
•    The Pallet LOOP is aligned with UK construction’s zero waste and net carbon zero goals
•    The team has created a range of standardised pallets that are typically stronger and easier to lift / stack
•    To ensure pallets are reused, The Pallet LOOP offers a nationwide pallet collection service
•    Green pallets are picked up from building sites, with up to £4 available for each one collected
•    This financial incentive is designed to encourage pallet returns and reward best practice
•    Green pallets are inspected, repaired where necessary, then put back in the LOOP
•    The Pallet LOOP can also pick up white pallets.

The benefits
In addition to reducing pallet waste, The Pallet LOOP delivers other benefits:
•    New revenue stream from the LOOP PayBack on green pallets (up to £4)
•    Pallet disposal savings on skips (up to £8 per pallet, depending on location)
•    Sites cleared of pallets through an efficient collection service
•    LOOP pallets collected free of charge
•    White pallets can be collected at the same time (charges apply)
•    Streamlined admin
•    Standardised pallet designs
•    Access to quantifiable financial and environmental saving data through LOOP’s online reporting tool.
