Construction is now underway on a major housing development in Abertridwr.
The scheme is a joint initiative between Caerphilly County Borough Council, the Welsh Government, and United Welsh, who will deliver 152 new homes on the site of the former Windsor Colliery.
The development will feature a mix of houses and apartments offered for social rent, affordable rent and home ownership.
All properties will be off the gas grid and constructed to top-tier energy efficiency standards, helping to lower carbon emissions and reduce heating costs for residents.
The homes will be delivered by Celtic Offsite, a social enterprise that is part of the United Welsh Group.
Celtic Offsite will produce the timber frame structures at its Caerphilly-based factory, with on-site completion of the homes carried out by contractor M&J Cosgrove.
To mark the beginning of construction, United Welsh enlisted local illustrator Chris Morgan to collaborate with pupils from Ysgol Ifor Bach on a mural project.
The artwork reflects Abertridwr’s heritage, its community spirit, and each student’s personal connection to the area.
Key delivery partners were recently welcomed to the site to witness the early stages of the development.

Councillor Shayne Cook, cabinet member for housing at Caerphilly Council, added: “Decent affordable homes are the foundation to people’s lives.

The scheme is being funded through the Welsh Government’s Social Housing Grant alongside support from the Cardiff Capital Region’s Viability Gap Fund—a £35m grant programme aimed at unlocking stalled development sites across the region.
Completion of the development is anticipated in 2028.
