James Latham’s Barry Jarvis retires after 52 years of devoted service

Today, Barry Jarvis, Redwood Warehouse Supervisor at James Latham Ltd’s Purfleet Depot, retires after over 50 years of service.

Barry is a lifelong ‘timber-vangelist’ who began working for Lathams in 1970 at the company’s former Clapton site. Rapidly rising through the ranks, he became Assistant Wharf Manager, responsible for overseeing much of the work on the shop floor.

When Lathams relocated its London operations to Purfleet in the early 2000s, Barry followed, taking on the position of Redwood Warehouse Supervisor.

In this role, he has overseen the running of the depot’s European Redwood Timber division, and has supported the development and training of new employees, passing on his infectious enthusiasm and passion for high-quality timber to the next generation.

Commenting on working for Lathams and his upcoming retirement, Barry says, “My time at Lathams has been exciting and full of variety. Starting on the barges taking deliveries of timber, things were very different back then! Working in the timber industry has been my one and only job and it’s been an interesting and enjoyable one. Lathams has given me many opportunities to grow in the business and, while I’m looking forward to my retirement, I will miss being part of the Purfleet team.”

Managing Director, Andrew Wright adds, “Barry is a one of a kind and I know everyone at Purfleet will miss him greatly when he retires in August. Giving Lathams over 50 years of devoted service is an impressive accomplishment, and his diligent work ethic and vast knowledge is unmatched. We wish him the very best he enjoys his well-earned retirement.”
