The Institute of Carpenters has briefed its Royal Patron on leadership succession, skills development and new initiatives aimed at strengthening the UK wood occupations sector.
The current and future leadership of the Institute of Carpenters has met HRH The Duchess of Gloucester as the organisation looks to its next phase of activity.
The meeting saw IoC President Geoff Rhodes formally introduce Richard Galbraith as President Designate ahead of his official start on 22 April.
Skills, mentoring and sector development
The Duchess was updated on the IoC’s strategic work, including the changing UK craft skills landscape and the successful conclusion of its Mentoring Champions programme.
New initiatives discussed included the WoodWork programme and the Wood Occupations and Materials Alliance, described by the institute as a new venture for the sector.
The meeting also covered the potential for a Royal Charter, the forthcoming 50th anniversary of the Merlane Trophy in 2027, and the upcoming IoC-NAS AGM and Members Day, which remains a key event for the professional community.
Earlier this year, the institute established The Duchess of Gloucester Award for the advancement of skills within the timber industry. The annual award will recognise organisations and individuals making an outstanding and measurable contribution to tackling skills needs in the timber sector.
The IoC’s international activity was also highlighted, including collaborations through TCE and new connections in Berlin and France. “The Duchess expressed her strong support for our mission, marking a positive and secure step forward for the IOC and our members,” said IoC President Geoff Rhodes.
The IoC represents professionals working with wood, including carpenters, joiners, furniture makers and shopfitters.
