Leading builders’ merchant Huws Gray has established its own operation at the former National Timber Group (NTG) site, now trading under the Thornbridge brand following NTG’s entry into administration in late 2025.
The transition safeguards the roles of several highly experienced staff members, with additional recruitment expected over the coming months.
Located in Ayr, the branch provides customers with a premium buying experience, with all timber stored indoors to ensure protection from Scotland’s often challenging weather conditions.
Eddie Hernon, managing director at PDM Huws Gray, said: “Following our recent investment in our flagship timber mill in Grangemouth, the expansion of our timber merchanting capabilities is a key strategic focus for Huws Gray in Scotland.
“After the news surrounding NTG broke in November, we began exploring how this opportunity could be realised, and I’m delighted that we have now agreed to take on the lease of this impressive Ayr site.
“As part of this growth, we currently have two vacancies at the Ayr branch and look forward to welcoming new colleagues to the team.”
The branch will remain under the leadership of Lynne Douglas and her existing team.
Lynne said: “The team has built strong, long-standing relationships with our local customer base, and we’re delighted to be able to continue supporting them.
“As part of the wider Huws Gray business, we’re now even better positioned to enhance the customer experience, with access to a broader product range and additional support.

Alongside a full rebrand planned for the coming weeks, the branch will be equipped to support a more diverse product offering, while continuing to build on its strong timber foundations.
National Timber Group, which operated businesses including Rembrands, Scotia Roofing, and Forfar-based Orchard Timber Products, filed a notice of intention to enter administration in November.
At the time, the group reported a combined turnover of £350m and employed around 1,200 people across the UK.
