Mid-Sussex Timber celebrates 90 years of importing timber to the building trade and retail markets

Mid-Sussex Timber (MST), which has been supplying directly imported timber to the building trade and retail markets since opening its first branch in East Grinstead in 1929, celebrated its 90th year in business with an evening of racing at Lingfield Park Racecourse.

The company, which is operated by second and third-generation family members; Tim, Simon, Alex and Cara Waters, is now one of the largest stockists in Sussex with branches in Haywards Heath, Forest Row, and most recently, Crowborough.

Guests, who included past and present employees along with their partners, enjoyed a three-course dinner between races. Simon Waters, MST’s sales director, talked attendees through the history of the business and Tim Waters, managing director, who presented an award for one of the day’s races sponsored by MST. The evening concluded with a gift of an engraved 1929 sixpence for the business’s current directors.

MST’s 90th year also brought another milestone for the company, as it launched its new website in May, bringing the business fully online. It features real-time inventory and stock, nominated day delivery, as well as a branch-specific click and collect service.

Alex Waters, operations director and grandson of the founder, said: “90 years is a landmark anniversary for any company, but for a small independent business such as ourselves, it is even more ground-breaking. A celebration like this gives us a valuable opportunity to reward all our staff who worked so hard to get MidSussex Timber to where it is today.

“Looking ahead, our new website and real-time inventory helps us take that important step into the future as we continually develop and improve our services to our customers.

“While celebrations themselves may have now come to a close ongoing success is due to continue at MST with many more prosperous years ahead.”
