Construction is now underway on Göteborg Grand Central, a new station building set to become a key feature of a newly developed district in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The project, which emphasises sustainable materials and modern design, will incorporate 9,100sqm of cross-laminated timber (CLT) supplied by Södra, in collaboration with its partner Hybridge.
The station building’s structural framework will be built primarily from wood, combined with recycled brick, climate-improved concrete, and recycled steel – all part of the project’s commitment to sustainability.
The completed building will stretch nearly 120 metres in length and stand more than 20 metres tall. Inside, exposed wooden elements will showcase the building’s eco-friendly construction approach.
Deliveries of Södra’s CLT are scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025. The station is expected to open in December 2026, with the upper floors completed by early 2027.
The architectural design comes from Oslo-based Reiulf Ramstad Arkitekter, while PEAB serves as the project’s main contractor. Jernhusen, the state-owned property company, will own and manage the completed building.
The Göteborg Grand Central project is part of Gothenburg’s ongoing urban development efforts, blending modern infrastructure with environmentally responsible construction to create a new, sustainable gateway to the city.
