Timber Merchant Marks 145th Year with Mill and Fleet Investment

Linnell Bros Ltd has strengthened its manufacturing and delivery operations with significant investment in new mill machinery and vehicles at its Silverstone headquarters near Northampton.

The 145-year-old timber merchant, now run by the fourth and fifth generations of the Linnell family, has installed a cross-cut line and double-end tenoner in its mill, alongside the addition of a new 7.5-tonne truck and a 26-tonne HIAB lorry to its delivery fleet.

The new machinery has been introduced to improve accuracy and efficiency across the mill’s processing capabilities, supporting the growing demand for the bespoke and made-to-order products supplied to both trade and retail customers. The equipment is now fully operational and enhances the company’s existing manufacturing capabilities, which include bespoke gate production, morticing, V-notching, round-topping and arris rail shaping.

“The cross-cut line and tenoner mean we can work faster and more accurately on the mill floor, which matters when so much of what we produce is made to order,” said Roger Linnell, director at Linnell Bros.

“It’s vital to give our team the right tools to keep quality high as demand continues to grow.”

“It’s also about staying competitive,” added Callum Jones, fifth-generation family director.

“Customers expect a consistent finish whether they’re ordering one gate or a thousand metres of fencing, and this kit helps us hold that standard as volumes increase.”

The transport investment sees two new DAF trucks replace ageing vehicles, bringing the company’s fleet to seven vehicles comprising four 26-tonne crane trucks and three 7.5-tonne trucks.

Linnell Bros supplies timber, fencing and treated timber to trade and retail customers across the UK. The company holds 20,000m³ of stock at its purpose-built 20-acre site, which also includes a dual pressure treatment plant.
